The origins of the Pepper Pot Day and of the pepper pot itself, go to the Revolutionary War. As the American army was camped at Valley Forge for ten days, on this night, an especially harsh winter night, George Washington asked the army's chef to cook a meal that would boost the soldiers' morale and warm them up.
The soup the chef came up with on December 29, 1777 was the pepper pot soup, also known as Philadelphia Pepper Pot Soup. It was so well received by the soldiers that it was called "the soup that won the war".
